Hosted by SAHA and SAHARA Newcastle University, UK, started collaborating in Africa in the 1980s on research into the epidemiology, clinical and public health impact, and prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases and their complications. Partners in this work included Ministries of Health and academic institutions in Tanzania, Cameroon and Mauritius. Substantial support was received from the UK Department of International Development, European Union and the Welcome Trust. This presentation aims to provide a critical overview of this work and its impact, and to promote a discussion on the future research priorities for the control of chronic non-communicable diseases in Africa. Professor Unwin (BA BM BCh MSc DM FFPH FRCP) trained in General Medicine and Public Health, before joining the Diabetes Group at Newcastle in 1993, working under the leadership of Sir George Alberti and Raj Bhopal. He left Newcastle for two years to work with the Diabetes Group at the World Health Organisation in Geneva and returned in 2006. Later this year he will leave Newcastle to take up the position of Professor of Public and Epidemiology at the University of the West Indies. To reserve a seat, kindly RSVP by 5 February Venues
