Presenters: Prof Haroon Bhorat and Ms Natasha Mayet, University of Cape Town The recently published Student Retention and Graduate Destination: Higher Education and Labour Market Access and Success (HSRC Press, 2009) arises out of an erstwhile HRD (now ESSD) research programme study that addressed three key issues in higher education (HE): why students drop out of HE; what leads students to persist in HE to graduation; and what makes for a successful transition to the labour market. A key chapter in this volume, "Student graduation, labour market destinations and employment earnings", focuses on the last of these issues in relation to the seven institutions included in the study: the University of Fort Hare; Stellenbosch University; the University of the North; the University of the Western Cape; the University of the Witwatersrand; Peninsula Technikon; and Pretoria Technikon. In this seminar, Dr Haroon Bhorat and Natasha Mayet, co-authors with Mariette Visser, will speak of highlights from the chapter, looking at the labour market outcomes of the cohort of graduates and non-completers in the study and at the determinants of graduation, employment and wages against the backdrop of current graduate labour market outcomes.
