Grade 12 Learner Destination Tracer Study

In 2005 the Education, Science and Skills Development (ESSD) research programme surveyed a sample of Grade 12 learners in schools across the country to gauge their aspirations for the future.
The Grade 12 Learner Destination Tracer Study project leader, Michael Cosser, pushes the button that determines the winners of the computerised random draw. Flanking him, from left, are Mike de Klerk (Chief Operating Officer, HSRC), Dr Andrew Paterson (Research Director, ESSD), Salim Akoojee (Chief Researcher, ESSD) and Fabian Arends (Research Technologist, ESSD

A total of 20 659 learners participated in the study. Of these, 17 641 provided contact details, allowing the research team to trace them in 2006 to ascertain where they had ended up a year later and why. In response to the 2006 Grade 12 learner Destination Tracer Study, 4 112 learners - or 23.3% – submitted valid returns.

As an incentive for participation, the research team decided to mount a competition in which five lap-top computers and ten cellular telephones would go to fifteen respondents who had submitted valid returns and whose names emerged through a computerised random draw. The draw duly took place at 12:45 on Wednesday 14 February 2007 in the ESSD boardroom of the HSRC, 134 Pretorius Street, Pretoria. In attendance were members of the project team, a senior executive of the HSRC in his capacity as auditor of the proceedings, and a member of Corporate Communications as photographer (see her photograph below).

The winners of the laptop computers are:
