Project summary

This project, funded by the South Africa-Norway Programme for Research Co-operation, examined psychosocial care approaches to improve the care of children in over-burdened, stressful hospital conditions. A situational analysis using observational methodology involved nurses, children and caregivers to identifying challenges and priorities for interventions. Naturalistic observations captured spontaneous care strategies indicating opportunities for feasible low cost interventions. Feedback discussions with hospital staff explored barriers and opportunities for sensitive interventions. Findings were presented in various national and international forums and the Department of Health has funded the production of advocacy film and UNICEF will host an expert meeting to discuss the development and dissemination of interventions at scale. Five areas of intervention were identified and an evaluation study has been funded to test their acceptability and effectiveness in the ward setting.
