Community art centres

The South African-Flemish Community Arts Centre Project is a partnership between the two governments in order to optimise community arts services in South Africa. A 2002 audit of the Department of Arts and Culture's arts centres revealed a number of factors that inhibited their full functioning.

The current project is the result of extensive debate of a number of strategies designed to address these problems. It is hoped that this project will:

• build capacity for the community art centres;
• have a positive impact on job creation;
• promote sustainability of service delivery infrastructure;
• promote cultural and social identity development; and
• encourage the economic empowerment of marginalised/rural women.
